The Perth Glory’s games this season under Alen Stajcic have showcased various themes, from late conceded goals to remarkable fightbacks, and the 3-3 draw against Adelaide United encapsulated it all.
Carl Veart’s side stormed the pitch, reminiscent of the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan, quickly securing a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes.
Ryan Kitto’s inch-perfect cross found towering striker Hiroshi Ibusuki, who headed home from close range just nine minutes in, leaving Oli Sail with no chance. Soon after, a contentious penalty awarded for Aleksandar Šušnjar’s challenge on Ibusuki allowed Zac Clough to double the Reds’ lead from the spot.
Despite the setback, Daniel Bennie had a promising opportunity to narrow the deficit, his effort hitting the post after Adam Taggart’s well-placed chip over the top found the winger.
However, the Glory found their footing courtesy of their captain, as just before the half-hour mark, Taggart demonstrated his prowess in the box, equalising with a clever finish from Darryl Lachman’s flick.
The second half saw an improved performance from the Glory, with increased tempo, intensity, and cohesion. David Williams, subbed in at the hour mark, wasted no time in making an impact, volleying home the equaliser from just outside the penalty box.
Williams’ contribution underscored his reputation as a clutch player, adding energy and presence to the team. Despite a few chances for United, none threatened Oli Sail in goal.
Josh Rawlins then gave the Glory the lead in the 80th minute, seizing on a loose ball in the box and finding the net.
Though Luke Bodnar’s handball in the box led to a penalty for United, Sail’s heroic save denied Stefan Mauk, preserving the lead. However, Adelaide managed to equalise in stoppage time, frustrating the Glory’s hopes for another maiden away win.
While the result was disappointing in the context of the ladder, there were positive takeaways.
The team’s resilience and fighting spirit, especially demonstrated by senior players like Taggart, Sail, and Williams, have been commendable. Additionally, despite clear defensive concerns, the Glory’s attacking prowess has been undeniable.
The attention now shifts to a crucial home game against Brisbane Roar next Saturday night, a match that holds a fair amount of significance for the WA football community as it honours Dylan Tombides as part of the DT38 round.
With former head coach Ruben Zadkovich returning, the game presents an opportunity for the Glory to secure a much-needed win, with every match now basically a final.
