Perth could host League of Ireland representative side in November

Plans are being drawn up for a League of Ireland representative squad to play three games in Western Australia next month.

While some of the finer details are to be confirmed, the Football Association of Ireland supports the initiative, and the travelling party would arrive in Perth on November 17.

Perth Glory have backed the tour in principle and are open to being part of the games, which could also feature the Football West State side.

With the A-Leagues on hiatus for three weeks during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the potential games would be of significant benefit to Glory’s men’s squad from a fitness perspective.

As well as the football related aspects, fundraising would take place to support families who were impacted by a recent tragedy in Cresslough, Donegal.

The small Irish town was rocked by a gas explosion at a petrol station and two-storey residential building in early October which took the lives of ten people, including two teenagers and and a five-year-old child.

“This is a great opportunity for the WA and Irish football communities to come together for three games and to raise funds for an important cause,” said Jon Ring of Citrus Marketing, the company behind the proposed tour.

The League of Ireland Premier Division season concludes on November 6, with Shamrock Rovers in pole position to claim the title for the third season in a row.

More details, including match dates and venues, are expected in the coming weeks.
